All Things Whedon

Buffy the Vampire Slayer comicA short post today just to follow up on Nathaniel’s excellent Firefly piece from a little while back. For any fans of that show, or for any Joss Whedon fans in general, you may want to dip your toes into the comics pool, because along with Firefly, Buffy is back! And in pog form! I mean, comics form!

That’s right, fanpeople, Joss Whedon is continuing his cult classic TV show in the pages of Dark Horse Comics’ Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 8. And, yes, the comic does in fact serve as a direct continuation from the final television season of that great, great show.

So, for any non-comic book inclined individuals reading this blog who may be Buffy or Firefly fans, this is a really great chance for you to jump into comics with a property that you’re familiar with.

And, to make things super easy on you newbies, the first two story arcs of the Buffy series and the first arcs of the Serenity series have been collected, and are available at your local comics shop, bookstore, and at Amazon.com. Heck, Nathaniel even laid out a price point for you already! Now, if you’re not sure where to find your local comics shop, you can check out the comic shop locator service and simply enter your zip code for a list of stores in your area.

And for fans of the Buffy/vampire genre, here are two of my own, personal comics recommendations that you might also want to check out when you head to the store:

30 Days of Night
, written by Steve Niles and beautifully (and creepily!) illustrated by Ben Templesmith. If you loved the movie, you really do need to check out the comic. An original concept and vampires. Really, really scary vampires. That’s something we haven’t seen in a while in any medium. Be warned, though. This is definitely not kid-friendly.

Dracula vs. King Arthur
, written by Adam and Christian Beranek and drawn by Chris Moreno. If the title alone doesn’t appeal to you, then it’s safe to say you won’t be a fan of this book! But, if you’re like me, and Vlad and Arthur are right up your reading alley, then check out this well written and beautifully drawn book from Silent Devil.

In conclusion, if this humble little post will be the impetus to get you into a comics shop for the very first time, I say to thee God speed! No, no, don’t worry about it. You’ll be fine. You’re going to like it. And, hey, check out what else the store has to offer.

You might be pleasantly surprised.
