Your Turn: Movie Trailer Opinion

Here's the deal for today: watch the movie trailer below (if you haven't seen it already) and leave a comment with your opinion on the trailer. I'm interested to know what you think.

The first Star Trek movie I've been looking forward to since Generations. The only part of the trailer I really don't like is the stupid "space cop", he looks and sounds stupid. Also, little Jimmy Kirk looks like he's related to the Weasleys.

However, to address seemingly popular complaints:

1. The trailer is all action!

Of course it is. You don't show deep emotional development and personal drive in a short trailer. Don't forget that the original Trek was loaded with action.

2. The Enterprise wasn't built on Earth!

Continuity, what? Like it really exists in Star Trek.

3. Why did he change X, Y, and Z about the Enterprise?

Because it looked better. Gene Roddenberry wanted the original Enterprise to look functional, so they used actual switches and knobs from NASA gear. What looked functional to them looks old and outdated to us now; hence the update. I think it looks fine.

4. I don't want to see Uhura's bra!

Like it or not, Star Trek has always had a lot of overt sexuality. Gene Roddenberry wasn't known as the abstemious sort and it carried over into his show. Where do you think the swooping necklines and miniskirts came from? How about Deanna Troi's catsuits?

5. Why are they reimagining Star Trek? I hate this! It was fine how it was!

Well, if it worked for James Bond...

Also, Trek is sort of a part of our modern mythology and culture. Look how many times and how many ways stories like The Three Musketeers and The Hunchback of Notre Dame have been retold. How about The Invisible Man? Frankenstein? There's nothing inherently bad about a reimagining; in a way, it's good, because it shows that people care about keeping it current.

So yeah, I'm looking forward to the new Star Trek.
